The Diamondbacks minor league system picked up their fifth league Player or Pitcher of the Week award for the 2024 season. This time, it’s left-hander Spencer Giesting of the Hillsboro Hops who won the Northwest League Player of the Week for May 13-19. In Hillsboro’s 4-1 win over the Tri-City Dust Devils on May 15, Giesting fired seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, walked one, and struck out nine.

Giesting, 22, was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of the University of North Carolina Charlotte, signing for $400K. After an unimpressive season with Hillsboro in 2023, he’s rebounded with a fantastic start in 2024. In six starts, the 6’4″ left-hander has a 0.79 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and only nine walks in 34 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .144 with a .391 OPS. He’s cut his walks per nine by more than half, from 5.46 in 2023 to 2.38 in 2024.

From his scouting report on FanGraphs, which ranks him as the No. 37 prospect in the system, Giesting features a fastball that’s 88-92 MPH and a slider that projects to be a plus pitch. They project him to be a matchup lefty out of the bullpen.
